Letter from the President
As we celebrate spring, despite the wintery weather remaining in parts of the country, we bring you greetings from the Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) and share with you exciting news about the research that we are supporting.
The ROI currently has four ongoing research projects that are improving outcomes for cancer patients right now by tapping into the potential of smart phone enabled technology and the power of big data. We are also looking forward to announcing up to $200,000 in new grants in April through our Innovative Projects in Radiation Oncology program. We received many promising proposals to address the topics determined by your input at last year’s Annual Meeting, including financial toxicity, access to care, patient and referring physician education, SBRT and hypofractionation.
In addition, with this issue of The Visionary, ROI is launching our 2018 Publication Award, which will recognize a manuscript on any of ROI’s priority research topics that has been published in the past year in any peer-reviewed journal. We have revised the Publication Award format to honor the best scientific work in one of the fields of critical need for radiation oncology that form the ROI’s research agenda: communication, safety and quality, toxicity management, comparative effectiveness and value.
Your support makes programs like these possible, and ROI finished 2017 on a strong note. The year ahead promises to be even stronger as the Founders’ Circle continues to grow as more of you make or renew generous commitments of $2,500 or more per year for five years to help sustain ROI’s research program. We have also recently introduced the President’s Circle, which provides recognition for annual leadership gifts of $1,500 or more. Members of both the Founders’ Circle and the President’s Circle will be invited to the “Celebration of Giving,” a thank you event for those who support ROI and the research that ROI sponsors. This special gathering will be held at the ASTRO Annual Meeting in San Antonio.
We are pleased to see this strong support of ROI, as strong support translates into research that has a direct impact on patients receiving radiation therapy. When you make a contribution to ROI, you are providing dollars that can be invested in our future. As you read this issue of The Visionary, we hope you gain insight into the research that ROI is sponsoring and the importance of your support of ROI in making that research possible.
