The Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) was fortunate to engage with many of you at ASTRO’s 60th Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. From sharing information about the ROI’s research program with residents at the ARRO Symposium to thanking our new and long-standing leadership donors at the Celebration of Giving reception, the ROI had a variety of opportunities to interact with and make a positive impression on meeting attendees.
Robert Miller, MD, MBA, FASTRO, the ROI Research Committee Vice-chair, helped kick the ROI’s activities off with his presentation at the ARRO Symposium on Saturday, October 20. Focusing on how the ROI supports residents with research grants and free educational webinars, Dr. Miller highlighted the ROI’s investments in the future of the profession.
The ROI began the first official day of the Annual Meeting with a financial planning breakfast where attendees learned about the recent changes in the U.S. tax code and their impact on personal financial planning. Speaker Russell LaGreca, vice president of Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management division, shared strategies to address the recent changes, including selecting the most tax efficient investments, evaluating current retirement plans, and planning charitable giving. Following the session, Mr. LaGreca met with individuals at the ROI booth to answer questions and provide additional information. Session attendees found the insights provided to be very valuable, and the ROI is looking forward to offering this popular service to ASTRO members again in the future.
The 5K Run for the Future to Benefit the ROI is always held on the Monday morning of the Annual Meeting, and more than 200 attendees ran or walked along the River Walk in this year’s race, which was hosted by Radiation Business Solutions for the ninth year in a row.
On Monday evening, the ROI hosted our first-ever Celebration of Giving reception for leadership donors. The gathering offered members of the ROI Founders’ Circle and President’s Circle the opportunity to mingle with each other and ROI researchers and enjoy champagne and hors d’oeuvres. ROI President Deborah A. Kuban, MD, FASTRO, and ROI Vice President Colleen A.F. Lawton, MD, FASTRO, recognized corporate donors Varian Medical Systems, Elekta and Radiation Business Solutions for their significant and long-standing support of the ROI. The 2018 ROI Publication Award winner Amar U. Kishan, MD, accepted his award for his outstanding manuscript, “Radical Prostatectomy, External Beam Radiotherapy, or External Beam Radiotherapy With Brachytherapy Boost and Disease Progression and Mortality in Patients With Gleason Score 9-10 Prostate Cancer.”
Throughout the meeting, members of the Board of Trustees and staff welcomed attendees to the ROI booth in the Innovation and Solutions Showcase. Many of the ROI’s current investigators were available to discuss their work with attendees during “Meet Our Researchers” sessions. At the booth, generous donors committed over $80,000 to help the ROI continue supporting the best and brightest researchers in the field. We were so glad to see all the new and familiar faces at the ROI booth and our events. Thank you for helping to make the ROI’s activities at the ASTRO Annual Meeting a success!
