Committee Job Descriptions

ROI is accepting applications from ASTRO members to volunteer for the Development Committee and the Research Committee. Appointments are for one year beginning January 1, 2025. Volunteering for ROI - the ASTRO Foundation - is documented in your ASTRO service record.

Please review the committee descriptions below to ensure that you can fulfill the expectations of service. Submit your application by October 20, 2024.

Development Committee

Committee Purpose:

The ROI Development Committee is charged with creating, approving and helping to execute the revenue-generation strategy in partnership with the staff liaison.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Strategy: Review, approve and evaluate an annual and/or multi-year development plan that will generate the funds needed to advance the ROI mission.
• Identification: Assist in identifying donors, including individuals, organizations and companies, based on personal knowledge of linkage, ability and interest.
• Outreach: Participate in the cultivation and stewardship of lapsed and prospective donors by direct outreach via face-to-face, post, email, phone call, video calls and other connection opportunities.
• Advocate: Share knowledge about and experience with ROI, helping to promote our good work and encouraging people to join our team.

Volunteer Commitments:

• Dedication to advance the ROI mission
• Engagement in ROI’s programs and activities
• Making a significant personal annual contribution to ROI
• Maintaining active ASTRO individual membership
• Actively participating in all committee meetings and discussions, with a requirement to attend at least half of the virtual meetings

Term of Service:
Each member of the ROI Development Committee serves a one-year, renewable appointment, that begins on January 1 of each year.

Research Committee

Committee Purpose:

The Research Committee provides strategic direction and technical expertise in support of the ROI’s mission to accelerate bold and innovative ideas in radiation therapy. The committee partners with staff to direct the ROI’s research program and ensure the organization funds the highest quality research to address key challenges in radiation oncology.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Serves as technical advisors.
• Develops and updates the ROI research agenda to identify priority research areas within the field of radiation oncology that will have an impact on practice and improve outcomes for patients.  
• Ensures the continuity of ROI’s research program based upon guidance from ROI constituents and strategic direction from the Board.
• Develops requests for proposals that align with the ROI research agenda to solicit innovative ideas for new research grant awards.
• Identifies and develops additional funding and recognition opportunities to stimulate research in the ROI’s priority research areas.
• Reviews all award applications and makes recommendations for funding allocations to the ROI Board.
• Provides oversight of the research projects awarded to verify that the investigators are making progress toward the aims outlined in their proposals.
• Establishes and updates the ROI’s research policies to ensure the integrity and quality of the awards process and the research supported.
• Helps disseminate information about the ROI’s research, including funding opportunities, the award winners and outcomes.
• Understands that ROI research grants are supported by donations and will consider a personal commitment.

Volunteer Commitments:

• Actively participates in all committee meetings and discussions, with an expectation to attend at least half of the virtual meetings.
• Responds to emails and online votes by the established deadlines.
• Maintains active ASTRO individual membership. 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with a peer-reviewed grant or on a research career pathway.

Term of Service:
Each member of the ROI Research Committee serves a one-year, renewable appointment that begins on January 1 of each year. Members may ordinarily be reappointed for up to four additional successive one-year terms.

All committee members please recall that as a volunteer you have a fiduciary duty to the Radiation Oncology Institute that includes a requirement to disclose any potential conflicting interests and a duty to maintain the confidentiality of information received in your capacity as an ROI volunteer. Please consider whether you may have any interests or relationships with other parties that relate to the work you are doing for the ROI and if you do, disclose them to the Chair at this time. Also please maintain the confidentiality of the information provided in this meeting and do not share it with others without clearing it with the Chair.
